In the 2019 ACS tables, the Census Bureau mislabeled “children of the householder” estimates as “own children of the householder.” This error affected ACS tables B11012, CP02, CP02PR, DP02, and DP02PR. Though “own children of the householder” and “children of the householder” are similar concepts, “children of the householder” are the biological, adopted, or stepchildren of the householder under 18. This definition slightly differs from “own children of the householder” (used prior to 2019) which is defined as the never married biological, adopted, or stepchildren of the householder under 18. The affected row labels have been corrected beginning with ACS 2020.
Since ACS 5-year tables are based on pooled estimates incorporating both concepts described above, the Census Bureau suppressed these rows in the 2016-2020 ACS 5-year CP02, CP02PR, DP02, and DP02PR out of an abundance of caution. In addition, the corresponding rows in the 2021 ACS 1-year CP02 and CP02PR tables were suppressed. Data users may use estimates from Table B11012 in lieu of these suppressions.
These rows will not be suppressed in subsequent releases. We have determined the difference in the estimates due to the difference in the definition were minimal.
Data users should be aware of these small differences as they make comparisons over time.
