Changes to Mortgage Status

Beginning in 2020, the Census Bureau implemented changes to how mortgage data was processed and tabulated in the American Community Survey (ACS).

In past years, if only a home equity line of credit (HELOC) loan was reported, then that loan was then considered the primary mortgage, and no longer considered a HELOC. Starting in 2020 this was changed as a result of research into the demographics of this HELOC-only population. Now a respondent can indicate that they have no primary mortgage but do have a HELOC. This change does not impact mortgage status or tenure, as even HELOC only households are considered mortgaged since these loans are still typically secured by the property. The only impacts would be where primary mortgage and home equity lines of credit are explicitly mentioned.
