Computer and Internet Usage: The Census Bureau, in consultation with the OMB, added computer and Internet usage questions to the ACS. As authorized by the Broadband Data Improvement Act of 2008, the Federal Communications Commission sponsored the computer and Internet usage topic, which is comprised of three household questions with a mix of fixed choice and open-ended responses. The new subject questions were added to all collection modes.
Veterans Status and Period of Service: At the request of the Department of Veteran Affairs, the Census Bureau revised the veteran status and period of service questions to simplify the reporting categories. The new version is used in all collection modes.
Income and Wages: To improve response by breaking the questions into shorter pieces, the wages, salary, tips, bonuses and commissions question was split into two questions, and the interest, dividend, net rental income, royalty, and estates and trusts question was split into three questions. These changes allow for better comprehension when an interviewer asks the question, and were incorporated into the interviewer-administered modes only.
