The Census Bureau identified a tabulation processing error impacting estimates of the population born outside the United States and period of entry in S0201. Estimates of the population born outside Puerto Rico and period of entry in S0201PR were also impacted by this error. These estimates can be found in table lines 139 through 142, under the “PLACE OF BIRTH, CITIZENSHIP STATUS AND YEAR OF ENTRY” section.
For S0201, the population born outside the United States should have included all individuals who were 1) born in Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, or Northern Marianas; 2) born abroad of U.S. citizen parent or parents; 3) a U.S. citizen by naturalization; or 4) not a U.S. citizen. For S0201PR, the population born outside Puerto Rico should have included all individuals who were 1) born in the United States; 2) born in Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, or Northern Marianas; 3) born abroad of U.S. citizen parent or parents; 4) a U.S. citizen by naturalization; or 5) not a U.S. citizen. Due to the error, the estimates in table lines 139 through 142 of S0201 and S0201PR only included the foreign-born—that is, individuals who were either a citizen by naturalization or not a U.S. citizen.
All iterations for race, ethnicity, and ancestry were affected, as were the native and total population iterations. The error did not affect foreign-born place of birth iterations.
For race, ethnicity, and ancestry iterations, size and period of entry estimates of the populations born outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico can be calculated using the ACS Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS). For the native and total population iterations, these estimates can be obtained from Tables B05005 and B05005PR. This error has been corrected in Table S0201 and S0201PR for future releases.
