After the release of the 2021 American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year data products and 2017-2021 ACS 5-year data, a coding error was identified in the detailed Hispanic Origin groups in select panels of data. The error was isolated among the Spanish (Code 2630) and Spanish American (Code 2670) groups. Specifically, Spanish write-ins that were correctly spelled in the Hispanic Origin question write-in area were incorrectly auto-coded as Spanish American, thus increasing the number of cases tabulated as Spanish American rather than Spanish.
The impact is limited to the estimates for Spanish and Spanish American which appear in table B03001. The 2021 ACS 1-year estimates for these groups should be compared with caution given this error. However, the coding error had a trivial impact on five-year period estimates that include 2021 (e.g., 2017-2021, 2018-2022, etc.). Estimates for the overall Hispanic or Latino and Not Hispanic or Latino populations were unaffected.
