Duplicate POWPUMA and MIGPUMA Codes in SC & VA for 2012-14 PUMS Files

The residence 1 year ago public use microdata areas (MIGPUMAs) and place of work public use microdata areas (POWPUMAs) for the Charlottesville, Virginia area (Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Nelson Counties, and Charlottesville city) and for the Roanoke area (Alleghany, Botetourt, Craig, Franklin Counties, and Covington, Roanoke, and Salem cities) were assigned duplicate codes of 51000 for the survey years 2012, 2013, and 2014 in the PUMS files.

In addition, the MIGPUMAs and POWPUMAs for Lexington and Saluda Counties, South Carolina and for Calhoun, Fairfield, Kershaw, and Richland Counties were assigned duplicate codes of 00600 for the same survey years.

To determine the duplicate MIGPUMA and POWPUMA codes, serial numbers and person numbers for those records with MIGPUMA or POWPUMA in Charlottesville area or Lexington and Saluda Counties are provided at the bottom of the 2012, 2013, and 2014 MIGPUMA and POWPUMA code lists for those variables.  The code lists are available at //www.census.gov/programs-surveys/acs/technical-documentation/pums/documentation.html.

Starting with the 2015 ACS, the MIGPUMA and POWPUMA for the Charlottesville area will be 51001 and the MIGPUMA and POWPUMA for Lexington and Saluda Counties will be 00606.  Currently, there are no plans to update the codes for 2012, 2013, and 2014 for the 2011-2015 PUMS datasets or other future multiyear datasets that contain data for those survey years.
