Race, Ethnicity, Ancestry and American Indian & Alaska Native Tables

Every five years, the Census Bureau releases two data products containing the greatest level of statistical detail for specific population groups:

  • Selected Population Tables (Race, Ethnicity, Ancestry): Available for selected race, Hispanic origin, tribal, and ancestry populations
  • American Indian and Alaska Native Tables: Available for selected tribal populations, with more detailed tribal categories compared to those in the Selected Population Tables

For more on American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) data, check out our handbook, Understanding and Using ACS Data: What Users of Data for American Indians and Alaska Natives Need to Know.

*To modify a table in data.census.gov to a specific race, Hispanic origin, or tribal population, select the "Topic" tool at the top of the table. Next, select "Race and Ethnicity." From here the table can be modified by specific race, Hispanic origin, or tribal population. Once a specifc race, Hispanic origin, or tribal population is selected, close the "Topic" tool and the table will be modified.  Similar steps can be followed to modify a table by ancestry.  Select the "Topic" tool and then select "Populations and People." Next, select "Ancestry" and from here a specific ancestry can be selected. Once an ancestry is selected, close the "Topic" tool and the table will be modified.

*To modify the geography of a table in data.census.gov, select the "Geographies" tool at the top of the table. From here the table can be modified by Region, State, County, and more. Once a geography is selected close the "Geographies" tool and the table will be modified.

Application Programming Interface (API) data:

The 2011-2015 ACS 5-Year Selected Population Data Profiles will not be migrated into data.census.gov or the API.

Documentation

Explore the list of available tables, population groups, geographies, and comparison guidance for the 2011-2015 ACS 5-year Selected Population Tables (SPT) and American Indian and Alaska Native Tables (AIANT). Additional details about the contents of this documentation are described below.

Tables Available

Browse the lists of available Data Profiles and Detailed Tables. The 2006-2010 ACS 5-year SPT and AIANT, as well as Census 2000 Summary File 4 (SF4) and American Indian Alaska Native Summary File (AIANSF) equivalent tables are also shown where possible.

Population Groups and Geographies Available

Tables will be available based on the size of the group and the number of sample cases for a specific geographic area (i.e., state or town). Steps 1 and 2 below outline the criteria for publishing estimates for groups.

Step 1-Population Groups Available

For Selected Population Tables:

The race, Hispanic origin, ancestry, or tribal population group must have a population of at least 7,000 at the national-level.

  • For race, Hispanic origin, and tribal groups, this is based on 2010 Census counts.
  • For ancestry groups, this is based on 2011-2015 ACS 5-year estimates.
  • There are 416 population groups included in the 2011-2015 ACS 5-year SPTs. View the "SPT Population Groups" tab for details.

For American Indian and Alaska Native Tables:

The American Indian or Alaska Native group must have a population of at least 100 at the national-level.

  • This is based upon 2010 Census counts for specific American Indian tribes and Alaska Native villages.
  • There are 1,119 population groups included in the 2011-2015 ACS 5-year AIANTs. View the "AIANT Population Groups" tab for details.

Step 2-Geographies Available

For the table to be released for a particular population group, the desired geographic area (i.e., the state of Florida) must have at least 50 unweighted sample persons from the population group, based on 2011-2015 ACS 5-year estimates. This requirement protects individual and household responses. View the "SPT Geographies" and "AIANT Geographies" tabs for more details.

Comparison Guidance

Definitions of American Indian and Alaska Native tribes change over time. Reference the "SPT Comparison Guide" and "AIANT Comparison Guide" tabs of the documentation to determine whether data for these groups are comparable to statistics from previous datasets.
