According to the Portuguese American Leadership Council of the United States, “Day of Portugal, officially Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities (Portuguese: Dia de Portugal, de Camões e das Comunidades Portuguesas), is the National Day of Portugal celebrated annually on 10 June. It is one of the public holidays in Portugal and celebrated by Portuguese-speaking people throughout the world. It commemorates the death on 10 June 1580 of Luís de Camões, a poet and national literary icon who penned the epic poem, Os Lusíadas. His mastery of verse has been compared to that of Shakespeare, Vondel, Homer, Virgil, and Dante.”

According to The World Factbook: Portugal, Introduction from the Central Intelligence Agency of the United States, “Following its heyday as a global maritime power during the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal lost much of its wealth and status with the destruction of Lisbon in a 1755 earthquake, occupation during the Napoleonic Wars, and the independence of Brazil, its wealthiest colony, in 1822. A 1910 revolution deposed the monarchy, and for most of the next six decades, repressive governments ran the country. In 1974, a left-wing military coup installed broad democratic reforms. The following year, Portugal granted independence to all of its African colonies. Portugal is a founding member of NATO and entered the EC (now the EU) in 1986.”
