One Year Out - Partnership Program - Potential Stories

The following information provides suggestions for story ideas on the topic of the 2010 Census Partnership Program. 2010 Census partners will serve as trusted voices to help ensure that the 2010 Census counts everyone. The story topics provided below will help articulate why partners become involved, why the 2010 Census is important to specific population demographics and will identify activities partners are undertaking that will be visible in communities across the country from now through May 2010. Each story can be easily customized with community data and regional or local partner information, which can be obtained by contacting your local Census Bureau Regional Office.

Partners: Why the Census Matters to Us

Each partner organization that has signed on to support the 2010 Census has specific motivations for participating in this nationwide outreach effort--whether it is to address potential issues and barriers that may keep audiences from participating, such as immigration or population redistribution due to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, or to ensure the race or ethnic populations they serve are accurately represented both in terms of funding and congressional representation. Spokespeople from each partner organization can share their perspective on why the 2010 Census matters to their constituents and how they plan to contribute their organization's resources to achieve a more complete count in 2010.

The 2010 Census: It Matters to Business

Companies across the U.S. have specific business reasons behind their involvement with the 2010 Census. In an environment where businesses must make tough financial decisions and tie a return on investment to every tactic, stories could explore why businesses see a 2010 Census partnership as a crucial investment of their time and resources. Stories can investigate how each business partner is viewing organizational involvement. Representatives from each organization can also explain, in specific detail, how they use census data to inform crucial business decisions, from where to build new stores, to where to offer sales or market new products.

Competitors for a Common Goal

The 2010 Census Partnership Program is an activity where similar organizations set aside the competition and come together to work toward a common goal: A complete, accurate count in 2010. Industry competitors, who are 2010 Census Partners, can share their points of view as to why they must unite to achieve a groundswell of support for this initiative.
