MARCH 27, 2025 – The U.S. Census Bureau today released a new summary report and data tables for the 2024 Annual Survey of Public Employment & Payroll (ASPEP). These statistics provide a comprehensive look at the employment of the nation’s state and local governments.
The survey provides state and local government data on full- and part-time employment; full-time equivalent employment; and gross monthly payroll for March 2024 statistics by governmental function such as financial administration, other government administration, highways, and air transportation. Federal, state and local governments, and education and research organizations use public employment and payroll data for comparative studies of state and local government employment and activities such as development of the government component of the gross domestic product (GDP).
The release also includes an individual unit file containing all data items by data code within the survey. This file provides the individual governmental unit-level response including descriptive information.
In addition to the new 2024 data, the Census Bureau released revised tables for 2022 and 2023. More information is available at www.census.gov/programs-surveys/apes/data.html.
The Census Bureau today also released the Public Sector Employment per 10,000 People in Selected States: 2024 graphic showing top state and local government functions in 2024.
