MAY 29, 2025 — The U.S. Census Bureau today released two new data tables from the 2022 Economic Census — one presenting data on products by industry and the other on industries by product. Products are categorized based on the North American Product Classification System (NAPCS) and industries by the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).
The products by industry table shows which products are produced or sold by which industries (at the 6-digit NAICS level).
It also shows:
The same product or service can be sold across different industries or even different sectors. For example, a household might purchase pet food from retail establishments classified in different NAICS industries, such as a pet supply retailer or a grocery store (Sector 44-45, Retail Trade). This same product might also be purchased from a veterinarian’s office, which is classified in a different sector (Sector 54, Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services).
The industries by product table flips the view and shows which industries are associated with each product.
It includes:
An industry can have a variety of products and services that contribute to an overall revenue. For example, a full-service restaurant might have revenue from meals and beverages for immediate consumption as well as retailing food for future consumption. In addition, they could also have revenue from services provided, such as rental space for parties and similar short-term social uses.
Note: “Revenue” in this release refers to “Sales, Value of Shipments, or Revenue.”
