Census Bureau Releases 2022 Local Estimates of Internet Adoption

Press Release Number: CB24-TPS.85

SEPT. 9, 2024 — The U.S. Census Bureau and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) today released the 2022 Local Estimates of Internet Adoption (LEIA), an experimental data product that measures Internet adoption at the county level.

As part of the federal government’s efforts to improve the availability, adoption and effective use of high speed Internet service through the Digital Equity Act programs and the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment program that are overseen by NTIA, communities may request funding to build digital skills and improve access to high-speed internet locally. To support these requests, NTIA has sponsored the Census Bureau to develop one-year, small area estimates of Internet adoption at the county level.

The 2022 LEIA were developed to obtain feedback from stakeholders and enhance future estimates. Using small area estimation methods, restricted microdata from the American Community Survey, public data from the Federal Communications Commission and the Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates, the Census Bureau produced single year estimates for all counties in the United States.

The 2022 LEIA include a feasibility report, user guide, and data files. Visit the LEIA main page for more information.
