Press Release Number CB24-TPS.58

JUNE 6, 2024 — The U.S. Census Bureau today released the first statistics from the 2022 Economic Census of Island Areas. Island and local area estimates are now available for American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), and Guam. Data for the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) are set to be released in July and Puerto Rico in December.

Island and local area estimates are available at the two- through selected five-digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) levels for all covered NAICS codes that meet publication standards. These statistics include the number of establishments, total employment, annual payroll and total sales, receipts or revenue. Data on expenses, inventories and a wide variety of statistics are also available for selected sectors.

Below are a few highlights for each island area. These data are available at data.census.gov

Estimates for American Samoa are shown for the whole island area, county equivalents (districts) and place equivalents (counties).

  • Of the 593 total businesses in American Samoa, 366 were in the Eastern District and 226 were in the Western District in 2022.

Estimates for CNMI and Guam are shown for the whole island area and municipalities (county equivalents).

  • Of the 1,523 total businesses in the CNMI, 1,452 were in Saipan municipality, 40 were in Tinian municipality and 31 were in Rota municipality in 2022.
  • Of the 3,412 total businesses in Guam, 1,616 were in Tamuning municipality, 501 were in Dededo municipality and 393 were in Hagåtña municipality in 2022.

The Economic Census of Island Areas is the U.S. government’s official 5-year measure of employer businesses in the five permanently inhabited U.S. territories. The economic census is the primary source of statistics about the structure and functioning of the economies for each of the Island Areas, serving as part of the framework for the national accounts of the Island Areas. Included in this release are 22 tables covering a wide range of data such as basic business statistics, revenue by North American Product Classification System (NAPCS) category, data by size categories of businesses and information on the race, gender and citizenship status of the business owners.

More information on the 2022 Economic Census release schedule is available online. Estimates for American Samoa were made available on June 4, estimates for the U.S. Virgin Islands will be released on July 9 and for Puerto Rico in December.
