U.S. Capital Expenditures in Robotic Equipment totaled $12,960 million in 2022

Press Release Number CB24-TPS.37

APRIL 10, 2024  U.S. capital expenditures for robotic equipment totaled $12,960 million (not statistically different than 2021 spending) and accounted for 1.1% of total equipment expenditures in 2022, according to new Annual Capital Expenditures Survey (ACES) estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau today. ACES estimates by business type add details to national-level estimates of investment in machinery and equipment. The estimates reflect data defined by the 2017 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).

Other highlights:

  • In 2022, Manufacturing (NAICS 31-33), Retail Trade (NAICS 44-45) and Construction (NAICS 23) accounted for 88.3% of total robotic equipment expenditures.
    • The Manufacturing sector was the largest investor, accounting for 56.2% of all robotic equipment expenditures in 2022.
    • The Retail Trade sector was the second-largest investor, accounting for 27.4% of all robotic equipment expenditures in 2022.
    • The Construction sector accounted for 4.6% of overall spending for robotic equipment in 2022.

Beginning with the 2020 ACES, the Census Bureau collected data at the industry level to provide estimates reflecting the NAICS industries that invested in robotics. Prior ACES estimates collected robotics data at the company level.
