2023 Survey of Income and Program Participation

JULY 11, 2024 — The U.S. Census Bureau today released data  from the 2023 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP). The SIPP is a longitudinal survey that provides comprehensive information about income and assistance program participation of individuals and households in the United States. The survey collects data and measures change in characteristics like economic well-being, family dynamics, education, assets, health insurance, child care and food security. 

The release includes: 

  • A series of fact sheets providing quick and easy statistics on the recipients of key social welfare and social insurance programs in the United States for calendar year 2022, including: Supplemental Security Income (SSI), veterans benefits, school meals receipt, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).
  • Data tables about the receipt of Social Security, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), retirement income, unemployment insurance, free and reduced-price school meals, Veterans Administration (VA) benefits, and child support for a variety of demographic characteristics. 
  • Wealth and Asset Ownership Data Tables providing nation- and state-level wealth and debt measures for a variety of demographic, social and household characteristics, including home equity, retirement account, vehicle debt, credit card debt and student loan.
  • Who Is Receiving Social Safety Net Benefits? This updated social safety net interactive data tool sheds light on the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of individuals and households that received a range of social safety net benefits from 2013 to 2022. The tool allows users to explore information about individuals and households receiving social safety net benefits in a selected year and to view program participation rates of individuals and households for a variety of characteristics.
  • Monthly and Episodic Poverty: 2022. This brief discusses monthly poverty rates, episodic poverty rates, and the duration spent in poverty, all of which are examined across multiple demographic groups. This brief also highlights SIPP's unique poverty data.
