DEC. 14, 2023 – The U.S. Census Bureau will host a webinar on Dec. 18 to provide updates on the methodology used in the forthcoming Vintage 2023 population estimates series. The Census Bureau releases annual population and housing unit estimates on a flow basis throughout the year. On Dec. 19, the Census Bureau will release the first July 1, 2023, population estimates for the nation, states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, as well as corresponding annual estimates and components of change since the 2020 Census.
Beginning with the Vintage 2021 estimates series, the Census Bureau has produced the base population (or starting point) for the post-2020 population estimates by integrating several sources of data, rather than relying strictly on the results of the latest decennial census. Although this “blended base” was adopted in response to data availability issues stemming from the impact of COVID-19 on 2020 Census operations and other complicating factors, it has also introduced the potential for further methodological improvements. The Base Evaluation and Research Team (BERT), consisting of Census Bureau subject matter experts, has researched ways to further improve the estimates base.
The Census Bureau invites data users to join the webinar to learn more about how the blended base and other elements of the methodology have been updated for the Vintage 2023 estimates series, including changes resulting from BERT's research.
Monday, Dec. 18, at 2 p.m. EST
The webinar will consist of a simultaneous audio conference and online presentation. Participants will be able to ask questions during the webinar.
