New Survey of Income and Program Participation Data Available

Press Release Number CB23-TPS.74

JUNE 27, 2023 — The U.S. Census Bureau today released data from the 2022 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP). The SIPP is a longitudinal survey that provides comprehensive information about income and assistance program participation of individuals and households in the United States. The survey collects data and measures change in characteristics like economic well-being, family dynamics, education, assets, health insurance, child care and food security.

This release also includes:

  • Data tables about the receipt of Social Security; Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF); Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP); Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC); Supplemental Security Income (SSI); retirement income; unemployment insurance; free and reduced-price school meals; Veterans Administration (VA) benefits; and child support for a variety of demographic characteristics.
  • The Wealth of Households:2021 brief. This brief examines household wealth at the end of 2021 using 2022 SIPP data. It highlights differences in the rates of asset and debt-holding and demonstrates significant variation in median household wealth by demographic and economic characteristics, such as education and income.
    • Data tables providing wealth and debt measures at the nation and state levels are also available.
  • Who Is Receiving Social Safety Net Benefits? data tool. This updated social safety net interactive tool sheds light on the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of individuals and households that received a range of social safety net benefits from 2013 to 2021. The tool allows users to explore information about individuals and households receiving social safety net benefits in a selected year and to view program participation rates of individuals and households for a variety of characteristics.
  • Sharp Drop in On-Site/In-Person Work Since 2019; Hybrid/Mixed Work Still Unusual, But Increasingly Common in 2021 America Counts story.
    • A 2019-2021 SIPP On-site, Mixed, and Home-Based Jobs table package is also available. This table package leverages the SIPP's detailed employment, commuting and work schedule measures to show trends in home-based work between 2019 and 2021.
  • Impact of Social Security Processing Error on Poverty Estimates: 2014-2021 SIPP working paper. This working paper examines a processing error in the 2014-2021 SIPP that resulted in double counted Medicare premiums, leading to inflated Social Security benefit amounts that impacted both income and poverty recodes. This paper corrects the double count, provides updated monthly and annual poverty rates, and provides files with corrected values for directly impacted variables.

The data are also accompanied by supporting materials such as metadata, an online codebook tool, and an updated users’ guide. The Census Bureau plans to release research briefs highlighting various social and economic topics in the coming months.
