2022 Census of Governments, Survey of Public Employment and Payroll

Press Release Number CB23-TPS.70

JUNE 14, 2023 — The U.S. Census Bureau today released a summary brief on the Survey of Public Employment and Payroll from the 2022 Census of Governments (CoG). The brief looks at the change in total state and local government employment and payroll since the 2017 CoG by state and local government and by full- and part-time employment. It also includes the top 15 government functions by employment for 2022, with elementary and secondary education heading that list.

The CoG, which contains over 90,000 government organizations, is the most comprehensive and precise measure of public sector activity within the U.S. economy. It is conducted every five years. With the release of each data product, the CoG provides policy analysts, researchers and the general public with a clearer, more complete picture of the public sector.

Additional data products from the 2022 CoG will be released later this year and next year. For more information about the planning and data dissemination, visit the 2022 CoG infographic.
