It’s Not Too Late to Respond to the 2022 Economic Census

Press Release Number CB23-TPS.39

APRIL 10, 2023 – The due date for responding to the 2022 Economic Census has passed, but it’s not too late to respond. Businesses that received an invitation to respond but have not yet replied are receiving past due notices with instructions on how to respond and how to receive assistance if needed. Response to the economic census is required by law.

Check the How Do I Get Started page for detailed instructions on how to create an account to begin reporting, to check filing status or ask for an extension. Businesses that need to request an extension can do so by logging into their account via the respondent portal, entering the authentication code sent to them by mail or email (found on the invitation to participate) and accessing their survey card.

Economic census data serve as the foundation for the gross domestic product and other leading economic indicators for the nation. Trade associations, economic development agencies, governments and individual businesses also use the data to inform decisions and policies. By completing the economic census, companies contribute to a wealth of valuable data that can help grow their business.

Upon completion of data collection, the U.S. Census Bureau will begin data processing and preparing the first look at 2022 Economic Census data for release in March 2024. Information about the timeline for the 2022 Economic Census, as well as the work we’ve done so far, is available in our press kit.
