2021 Annual Survey of Manufactures Now Available

Press Release Number CB22-TPS.113

DEC. 15, 2022 ― The U.S. Census Bureau today released data from the 2021 Annual Survey of Manufactures (ASM). Statistics showed the value of shipments in the nation’s manufacturing sector increased 16.8% from 2020 to $6.1 trillion in 2021.

Other highlights include:

  • The total value of shipments for the Petroleum Refineries industry (North American Industry Classification System, NAICS 324110) was $560.0 billion, up 78.2% from 2020.
  • The total value of shipments for the Iron and Steel Mills and Ferroalloy Manufacturing industry (NAICS 331110) was $118.8 billion, a 59.7% increase from 2020.
  • Among states and state equivalents, the value of manufacturing shipments in 2021 ranged from $0.3 billion in the District of Columbia to $652.4 billion in Texas.

The 2021 General Statistics for Industry Groups and Industries table from the ASM presents data at the two- through six-digit NAICS levels for employment, payroll, cost of materials, operating expenses, value of shipments, value added and inventories.

The 2021 Geographic Area Statistics tables present manufacturing data for the United States and states at the two- through four-digit NAICS levels and supplemental statistics for the nation and each state at the two-digit NAICS level.

The 2021 Industry-Product Analysis table presents two- through six-digit NAICS levels by North American Product Classification System (NAPCS) collection code.

The 2021 ASM provides manufacturing statistics crucial to accurate estimates of domestic production and productivity and to making sound decisions on economic trade policies. Companies, business analysts and trade associations use these data in planning investments, production and marketing. These data are published annually, except in years ending in 2 and 7, when they are included in the manufacturing sector of the economic census.

The statistics in this report are estimated from sample surveys and are subject to sampling variability and nonsampling error including bias and variance from response, nonreporting and undercoverage.
