Census Bureau Releases 2020 Annual Capital Expenditures Survey

Impacts of the Coronavirus Pandemic on Business Operations

JUNE 15, 2022 — The U.S. Census Bureau released data from the Annual Capital Expenditures Survey (ACES) covering data year 2020. As part of the 2020 ACES, special questions were asked to gather information about the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on business operations. Tables provide the sources of financial assistance requested/received by companies with employees in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic, use of the financial assistance received, impact on payroll and budgeted capital expenditures, and the use of capital expenditures to fund investments related to social distancing and safety. All data will be available at the national level by 2-digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) industry sector. Sources of financial assistance requested/received will also be available for companies without employees.

Highlights

  • Financial assistance from the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) was requested by 61.7% of companies with employees and received by 58.3%.
  • In 2020, 61.0% of companies with employees received financial assistance from one or more sources and used the funds to rehire or maintain employees on their payroll, 20.1% used the funds to pay the rent/mortgage, 15.3% to pay for utilities, 2.2% for capital expenditures, and 5.6% for all other expenses.
  • The coronavirus pandemic impacted the payroll of 45.3% of companies with employees. This breaks down to 39.2% having reduced the hours/benefits/pay of their employees, 5.9% increased the hours/benefits/pay of their employees, and 0.2% saw a different impact on their payroll.
  • In 2020, 6.0% of all companies with employees cancelled some of their budgeted capital expenditures, and 9.7% postponed some budgeted capital expenditures.
