New Comparative and Bridge Statistics Reports From 2017 Economic Census Now Available

Press Release Number CB21-TPS.107

SEPT. 16, 2021 – The U.S. Census Bureau today released the Comparative and Bridge Statistics reports from the 2017 Economic Census. The Comparative Statistics report provides industry data for 2012 and 2017 at the two- through six-digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) levels based on the 2012 NAICS codes. The Bridge Statistics report includes data for 2017 for industries whose NAICS codes changed from 2012 to 2017 and shows the components of the NAICS change.

The Comparative Statistics report shows data on the number of establishments, employment, payroll and sales in 2012 and 2017 tabulated on the 2012 NAICS basis. These data allow users to compare data for 2012 and 2017, even if there were changes to the NAICS codes that might otherwise impact the comparability of the data.

The Bridge Statistics report also shows data on the number of establishments, employment, payroll and sales, but only covers the NAICS codes that were affected by changes from the 2012 NAICS basis to the 2017 NAICS basis. Industries that were not affected by a NAICS change are excluded. The first table of the report shows 2017 NAICS industries and their 2012 NAICS-based parts. The second table shows 2012 NAICS industries and their 2017 NAICS-based parts.

The Comparative and Bridge Statistics reports are important not just to compare data from the 2012 and 2017 Economic Censuses, but also other data products, including those not released by the Census Bureau, that publish data on the NAICS basis.

These two reports mark the last of the data released from the 2017 Economic Census. The Census Bureau will begin collecting data for the 2022 Economic Census in 2023.
