Census Bureau Announces New National Advisory Committee Leadership

Press Release Number CB18-119

AUG. 7, 2018 — The U.S. Census Bureau has announced that Carol Gore is now serving as chair of the National Advisory Committee (NAC) on Racial, Ethnic and Other Populations.

Ms. Gore is president and chief executive officer of Cook Inlet Housing Authority. She has served on the committee for five years including the past three years as NAC vice chair.

Julie Dowling is now assuming the role of NAC vice chair. Dr. Dowling is an associate professor in the Department of Latina/Latino Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She has served as a NAC member since 2014.

The NAC consists of up to 32 members appointed by the Director of the Census Bureau. The director appoints the committee chair and vice chair for renewable one-year terms.

The NAC is an important channel of communication between the Census Bureau and race, ethnic, and other communities, focusing “on the identification of new strategies for improved census operations, survey and data collection methods, including identifying cost-efficient ways to increase census participation” and reduce the undercount. The committee also advises on data privacy and confidentiality, among other issues.

The NAC will meet for their fall 2018 meeting at Census Bureau headquarters in Suitland, Md., November 1-2, 2018.
