2017 American Housing Survey Data

Press Release Number CB18-TPS.43

SEPT 6, 2018 — Today the U.S. Census Bureau and Department of Housing and Urban Development released new housing data from the 2017 American Housing Survey (AHS). The biennial AHS is the nation’s most comprehensive housing survey, providing current data on a wide range of housing subjects. Topics unique to the AHS include characteristics and physical condition of the nation’s housing units, indicators of housing and neighborhood quality, and home improvement activities.

Today’s release includes national-level data and data for the 15 largest metropolitan areas. New for 2017 are statistics regarding disaster preparedness, which were last collected in the 2013 survey. Later this year, additional data on topics such as evictions, delinquent payments and notices, and commuting costs will be released, as well as data for an additional ten metropolitan areas and nine states.

The 2017 AHS data are being released as summary tables and microdata files. Summary tables present aggregate statistics and are available in the AHS Table Creator. Microdata are files containing individual responses to survey questions that can be used to create custom tabulations, allowing users to delve further into the rich detail collected in the AHS. Microdata files are available on the Census Bureau’s AHS website.
