Census Takers Ready to Begin Going Door-to-Door in Providence County, Rhode Island

Press Release Number CB18-TPS.25

MAY 9, 2018 — Today, about 1,000 local census takers will begin going door-to-door to collect information from households that did not respond to the 2018 Census Test taking place in Providence County, R.I. This phase, called Nonresponse Followup, is the next major operation of the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2018 Census Test.

The census takers will use smartphones to guide them to their assigned housing units and to collect census test information.

“It’s not too late to respond to the census test to avoid a follow-up visit; however, should a census taker contact you, we ask that you cooperate with them,” said Jeff Behler, director of the Census Bureau’s New York Regional Office. “The Census Bureau protects your answers. It’s against the law for us to publicly release your responses in any way that could identify you or your household."

The 2018 Census Test is a critical part of preparations for the nation’s upcoming 2020 Census. The test will help the Census Bureau validate its readiness for 2020 Census operations, procedures, systems and field infrastructure for the once-a-decade census.
