2016 International Data Base Update

Press Release Number CB16-TPS128

AUG. 17, 2016 — The current update provides revisions for 14 countries and areas, incorporating new data from censuses, surveys, and administrative records and new analyses. Revised estimates and projections are available for Argentina, Bangladesh, Croatia, Cuba, Egypt, Eritrea, Gaza Strip, Haiti, Namibia, Nepal, South Korea, the United States, Venezuela and West Bank.

Highlights from the International Data Base:

  • Niger is the youngest country as measured by median age, and Monaco is the oldest. Half of Niger’s population is under the age of 15.3, while half of Monaco’s population is over the age of 52.4.
  • Niger has the highest fertility rate with 6.6 children per woman, and Singapore has the lowest total fertility rate of only 0.82 children per woman.

The International Data Base is a series of estimates and projections that provide a consistent set of demographic indicators, including population size and growth (by sex and single year of age up to 100 and over) and components of change (mortality, fertility and net migration) for more than 200 countries and areas. The U.S. Census Bureau periodically updates the database as new data become available.

These and other demographics can be found at <www.census.gov/population/international/data/idb/informationGateway.php>.
