The Opportunity Project, an innovation program founded by the Census Open Innovation Labs (COIL) at the U.S. Census Bureau, brings together government, technologists and communities to co-create digital products that use federal open data to serve the public. To date, 30 federal agencies, hundreds of organizations, and thousands of individuals have participated in technology development sprints—resulting in over 200 digital tools and products including apps, websites, interactive maps, data visualizations, games and more.
TOP 2023 will showcase 28 of the more than 35 new sprint products built by hundreds of participants in the past year’s ten TOP sprints. This past year’s sprints focused on key national and Puerto Rico-specific challenges, and were led by 8 federal agencies (the Departments of Commerce, Health & Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Transportation, Agriculture and Energy, and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy), 3 Puerto Rico government agencies (PR Energy Bureau, PR Dept. of Economic Development and PR Dept of Education) and two nonprofits (New America and Instituto del Desarrollo de la Juventud).
