On October 4, 2011, the Full Report on Manufacturer’s Shipments, Inventories and Orders for August 2011 was released. Preliminary estimates show January – August 2011 shipments of transportation equipment were $365.8 billion, up 4.1% over the $351.3 billion from January – August 2010. (All data are not seasonally adjusted.)
Using USA Trade Online, we can see that U.S. exports of transportation equipment also increased. Exports were up 12.3% from January – August 2010 ($124.2 billion) to January – August 2011 ($139.5 billion).
The chart below takes a deeper look into the January – August Year-to-Date (YTD) export figures beginning in 2006 through 2011. Between August 2006 YTD and August 2008 YTD, exports of transportation equipment grew 22.5%. Automobiles and light truck exports alone increased 51.8%, while heavy duty truck exports rose 6.1%. However, over the next year (August 2008 YTD to August 2009 YTD), the industry sharply declined 28.0%. Heavy duty truck exports dropped 29.2%. Automobiles and light trucks declined 53.2%.
