Since the publication of the SSN Final Rule, many have asked, “Why am I no longer able to use my SSN to register or file through the AES?” Since the SSN is no longer accepted in the AES, you are now required to report an Employer Identification Number (EIN) or a DUNS number from Dun and Bradstreet.
An EIN can be obtained for exporting purposes from the Internal Revenue Service and a DUNS number can be obtained from Dun and Bradstreet after an EIN has been obtained. Obtaining an EIN is simple and free of charge and we have step-by-step instructions on our website at www.census.gov/trade.
For additional information regarding the SSN interim Final Rule, please visit the Regulations tab on our website.
