Eliminating the use of your Social Security Number (SSN) in the Automated Export System (AES)

Written by:

Since the publication of the SSN Final Rule, many have asked, “Why am I no longer able to use my SSN to register or file through the AES?” Since the SSN  is no longer accepted in the AES, you are now required to report an Employer Identification Number (EIN) or a DUNS number from Dun and Bradstreet.

This rule was implemented to ensure that the SSN of the U. S. Principle Party in Interest (USPPI) or authorized agent is protected in accordance with the Privacy Act of 1974.

An EIN can be obtained for exporting purposes from the Internal Revenue Service and a DUNS number can be obtained from Dun and Bradstreet after an EIN has been obtained. Obtaining an EIN is simple and free of charge and we have step-by-step instructions on our website at www.census.gov/trade.

Summary:

  • A SSN is no longer acceptable identification number when registering or filing in the AES.
  • Any individual or nonbusiness owner will need to obtain an EIN or DUNS number for exporting purposes for identification purposes in the AES.
