Introducing My Tribal Area

Written by:

As the nation’s premiere source of data about America’s economy, businesses and people, the U.S. Census Bureau is committed to making our data more accessible than ever before through new tools and datasets. We continuously rely on the public’s feedback for ways to improve access to our data.

Since last October, the Census Bureau has held 18 consultations with tribal leaders across the United States. We’ve discussed topics like geography, data collection and promotion to prepare for the 2020 Census. We also heard many requests for easier access to statistics about tribal areas and reservations.

Today, the Census Bureau is rolling out a new way to access those statistics: My Tribal Area. This Web app provides easy access to statistics that detail characteristics of the people, jobs, housing, economy and educational levels in our nation’s tribal areas and reservations. The statistics come from responses to the American Community Survey from 2011-2015. You can also view map images and descriptive legends for all 618 tribal areas.

My Tribal Area is designed to give you quick and smooth access to information. For example, you can search for tribal areas by name or by state. A glossary helps you understand how the app defines the types of reservations and tribal areas.

As with all Census Bureau tools, statistics from My Tribal Area are easy to download and share on social media. You can also embed the interactive app on your own website. Whether you access My Tribal Area as an embedded Web app or through census.gov, you’ll always get the most up-to-date statistics.

My Tribal Area is available at <www.census.gov/tribal>. We’re always looking for ways to make our tools more useful, and we’ll continue to add functionalities. If you have ideas for how we can improve, I encourage you to submit your feedback through the “Tell us what you think” link. And if you like My Tribal Area, check out our other mobile apps and interactive data tools.
