Aging Research Director, International Programs Center, Population Division

Thom File is the aging research director in the U.S. Census Bureau’s International Programs Center. He oversees an expansive research agenda focused on the social and demographic impacts of global aging in disparate societies and works closely with funding partners at the National Institute on Aging.

File has been at the Census Bureau since 2006, when he joined as a survey statistician, and in 2010 he helped manage the New York Regional Census Center’s field operations. He has authored reports on voting and registration, computer and internet use and other survey research topics, and has researched rapid response survey design and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on U.S. households, with a specific focus on mental health outcomes and the measurement of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Born and raised in Cody, Wyoming, File holds a bachelor’s degree from Beloit College in Wisconsin and a master’s degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
