Dr. Seth Spielman is Director of Metrics and Data Science at Microsoft and Visiting Professor of Geography at the University of Liverpool. Dr. Spielman is a data scientist who works at the intersection of geography, demography, urban planning, and statistics. His academic work focuses on the measurement and digital representation of social and economic landscapes. His career has moved fluidly between industry and academia. He has held academic positions at Brown, Columbia, and most recently the University of Colorado at Boulder where he was an Associate Professor of Geography and Information Science and Vice Chancellor for strategy, data, and analytics. From 2015-2019 he worked at Apple, Inc. where he contributed to the reinvention of Apple Maps. He has received the Breheny Prize for work in Urban Analytics and City Science, a Distinguished Scholar Award from the American Association of Geographers, and an award from the American Statistical Association (for work the NSF-Census Research Network). His research experience ranges from internet scale analytics and product development to focus groups with users of public statistics. Once upon a time Dr. Spielman was the sole proprietor of an antiquarian bookshop in Manhattan.
