Ian Hull

Chief, Field Division, U.S. Census Bureau

Ian Hull is the chief of Field Division overseeing the collection of household data for current surveys and censuses, and the decennial census. The heart of the Directorate is the thousands of interviewers, known as field representatives, who work in every county in the United States, collecting data directly from the American public and are based out of the Census Bureau’s our six regional offices (in Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, New York, and Philadelphia).

Ian has worked in numerous leadership positions throughout the Economic, Decennial, and Field Directorates during his career. He’s returning to Field Division for the third time, with his most recent roles there being the New York Region’s acting regional director and 2020 Census deputy regional director. Ian also worked in the Dallas Regional Office for the 2010 Census and then on current surveys up until the region’s closure in 2012.

He most recently managed the infrastructure portfolio of 2030 Census research projects as a special assistant to Associate Director for Decennial Census Programs. He has played a key role in integrating the 2030 Census planning processes for the Decennial and Field Directorates. Ian also served as the assistant division chief for geographic operations in the Decennial Census Management Division, assisting with the development of geographic and frame operations for the 2020 Census. He began his career at the Census Bureau in 2007, working in the Economic Directorate in the former Manufacturing and Construction Division.   

 Ian earned a bachelor of science degree in economics and public administration from Elon University in North Carolina. He also received a master's certificate in project management and an associate citation in business analysis from George Washington University.
