Assistant Division Chief of the Survey Coordination and Disclosure Avoidance Staff, U.S. Census Bureau

Hyon B. Shin is assistant division chief of the Survey Coordination and Disclosure Avoidance Staff in the U.S. Census Bureau’s Social, Economic, and Housing Statistics Division (SEHSD). This area coordinates SEHSD’s work on the American Community Survey (ACS), the Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplements (CPS ASEC) modernization, the Demographic High Frequency Surveys (DHFS), and the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP).

Hyon joined the Census Bureau in 2000 as a summer intern working on Census 2000 demographic analysis. After her internship, she moved to the Education and Social Stratification Branch in SEHSD, where she was the subject matter expert on language use and English-speaking ability, school enrollment, voting and registration, and computer and internet use. In 2012, Hyon detailed to the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders to work on education policy. Soon after the detail, she became assistant survey director where she oversaw the budgeting, scheduling, and management for the National Household Education Survey and the National Adult Training and Education Survey.

From 2014 to 2019, Hyon served as chief of the Racial Statistics Branch in the Population Division, overseeing research, analysis, and review of race data and all aspects of collecting, processing, editing, and tabulating accurate race and ethnicity data for the 2020 Census.

Hyon has a master’s degree in demography from Georgetown University and a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Pennsylvania State University. She also earned a master’s certificate in project management from George Washington University. She has received the Commerce Department Bronze and Silver Medals.
