D’Lane R. Compton

Professor and Chair of Sociology at the University of New Orleans

Dr. D’Lane Compton (pronouns: they/them) is Professor and Chair of Sociology at the University of New Orleans and has worked with census data and LGBT measurement issues for over 20 years.  Compton is the author of three co-authored books dealing with LGBT methods: Same-Sex Partners: The Demography of Sexual OrientationLegalizing Gay and Lesbian Families: How the Law Affects Decisions for LGBT Parents, and Other, Please Specify______: Queer Methods in Sociology. Compton has been a critical voice in new ways of capturing gender identity on large scale surveys. In 2017, Compton submitted a proposal (with Kristen Schilt at the University of Chicago) to include a two-step method for assessing gender identity and assigned sex at birth to the General Social Science (GSS) Survey. This proposal was accepted after peer-review by the GSS, was added to the survey, and has now yielded the first nationally representative data on the transgender population. Compton and Danya Lagos at the University of California at Berkeley assessed the first round of these trans data in a recent paper published in Demography. Overall, Compton's work stresses measurement, methodology, and data improvements, particularly toward the LGBT population.
