Assistant Division Chief, Small Area and Longitudinal Estimates, Social, Economic, and Housing Statistics Division, U.S. Census Bureau

Alfred Gottschalck is the Assistant Division Chief for Small Area and Longitudinal Estimates of the Social, Economic, and Housing Statistics Division at the U.S. Census Bureau.  Dr. Gottschalck oversees a broad area at the intersection of the survey methodology and administrative records data fields where staff are engaged in the “blending” of survey and administrative records data with the goal being one of creating unique, value-added data products, as well as developing innovative methods using administrative records data to improve traditional survey estimates.  He directs the Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates (SAIPE) and Small Area Health Insurance Estimates (SAHIE) programs. 

Previously, Dr. Gottschalck served as the Chief of the Labor Force Statistics Branch and as an analyst within the same branch.  He has authored numerous Census Bureau reports and papers related to labor and wealth economics topics such as employment status, unemployment duration, earnings differentials, and wealth disparities, in addition to survey methodology research pertaining to the collection of labor force and wealth data. 

Dr. Gottschalck earned his doctorate from the University of Delaware in economics, as well as a Master’s degree in economics and an undergraduate degree in economics and finance.  He has received a Department of Commerce Silver Medal for his work on the re-engineering of the Survey of Income and Program Participation and is a graduate of the Excellence in Government Fellows Program.
