Census Bureau Releases 2015 Annual Survey of Manufactures Data

Press Release Number CB16-TPS.155

DEC. 16, 2016 — The U.S. Census Bureau today released data from the 2015 Annual Survey of Manufactures.

The files show that petroleum refineries experienced a 37.4 percent decrease in value of shipments from $741.1 billion in 2014 to $464.3 billion in 2015.

Other highlights include:

  • The cost of materials of petroleum refineries decreased 43.5 percent from $656.1 billion in 2014 to $370.8 billion in 2015.
  • Annual employee salaries for petroleum refineries (NAICS 324110) were on average $121,352 per employee in 2015.
  • Texas ($149.5 billion), Louisiana ($88.5 billion) and California ($58.4 billion) comprised approximately 58.0 percent of all U.S. manufacturing receipts for NAICS subsector 324, petroleum and coal products manufacturing ($508.0 billion).

The survey provides manufacturing statistics that are crucial to accurate estimates of domestic production and productivity and to making sound decisions on economic trade policies. Companies, business analysts and trade associations use these data in planning investments, production and marketing. These data are published annually, except in years ending in 2 and 7, at which time they are included in the manufacturing sector of the Economic Census.

The General Statistics for Industry Groups and Industries report presents data at the two- through six-digit NAICS levels on statistics such as employment, payroll, cost of materials, operating expenses, value of shipments, value added and inventories.

The Value of Products Shipments report presents statistics for the nation on the value of shipments for a wide array of specific products (such as peanut butter, gloves and mittens, and toothpaste). This includes 364 six-digit NAICS industries and 1,384 seven-digit NAICS product classes.

The Geographic Area Statistics reports present data by state at the two- through four-digit NAICS levels and supplemental statistics for the United States and each state at the two-digit NAICS level.
