The U.S. Census Bureau will offer a same-day embargo period next week for members of the media to view statistics and analysis on voting rates in the 2012 presidential election.

The report, The Diversifying Electorate — Voting Rates by Race and Hispanic Origin in 2012 (and Other Recent Elections) and accompanying detailed and updated historical tables will be posted to the Census Bureau's embargo site at 9 a.m. EDT Wednesday, May 8. Only members of the media with current embargo passwords may access the information. See the Census Bureau's <embargoed releases> page for more information or to apply for embargo access.The public release will be at 5 p.m. EDT Wednesday, May 8.

Media availability with Thom File, a sociologist in the Census Bureau's Education and Social Stratification Branch and the report's author, will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. for embargo subscribers. Call-in information will be posted on the embargo site Wednesday morning.

The embargoed information may not be published or posted online until the public release date and time. Furthermore, wire and distribution services are prohibited from distributing embargoed news releases and data files to subscribers prior to that time.

The report and tables provide analysis of the likelihood of voting by a wide range of demographic factors, including race, Hispanic origin, sex, age and geography (specifically, census divisions). The statistics come from the November 2012 Current Population Survey Voting and Registration Supplement.
