The Composition of the Population Deprived in Multiple Dimensions

Written by:
Working Paper Number: SEHSD-WP2024-30

The Multidimensional Deprivation Index (MDI) is a measure of deprivation in six dimensions estimated from the American Community Survey: standard of living, health, education, economic security, housing quality, and neighborhood. In order to be considered multidimensionally deprived, a person must be deprived in at least two of the six dimensions. The MDI provides a more expansive view of well-being than income-based poverty measures because it includes people deprived in other areas of life. This paper updates a 2021 paper, which showed MDI rates for 2010 through 2019, with MDI rates for 2021 through 2023. In contrast to the 2021 paper, the focus of this paper is on the demographics of the MDI population and how these compare to the overall population. This involves comparing MDI shares and population shares over time and the numbers and combinations of dimensions people are deprived in by age and race and Hispanic origin.
