An Exploratory Analysis of Mate Selection Among the Black Multiracial Population in the United States: 2008-2012 and 2018-2022

Written by:
Working Paper Number SEHSD-WP-2024-20

Presented at the annual meeting of the Population Association of America, April 2024.

Largely a result of unions between people from different race/ethnicity groups, the multiracial population in the United States continues to grow rapidly. While previous research has largely focused on mate selection and marriage patterns among those who identify as single race, less is known about the mate selection and partner choices for the growing share of multiracial Americans. Using data from the American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year files, the current research will focus on the spouse and partner choices of the Black multiracial population, comparing the race of coresidential spouses or partners for two periods: 2008-2012 and 2018-2022.
