After releasing the 2021 American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year estimates, the U.S. Census Bureau identified a data processing error that affected select respondents by survey mode. The error affected respondents that completed a paper questionnaire and did not report working all 52 weeks in the previous 12 months. Consequently, the number of weeks worked for these respondents was incorrectly logged. The error began in the fourth quarter of 2019 and was traced to a flaw in the process during which hand-written responses were converted into a computerized format. The error impacted data collected via mail questionnaires for a small number of responses in 2019 and all mail responses in 2020 and 2021. As reported in an ACS errata note, the error had only a nominal impact on final estimates for employment, income, poverty, and related topics in the 2021 ACS 1-year estimates. This working paper provides information about the nature of the processing error and its effects on the 2021 ACS 1-year estimates using internal-only ACS data for analyses.
