The Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) is a longitudinal survey, collecting monthly data on economic well-being since the 1980s. Prior to 2014, the data were collected every 4 months. Since 2014, the data are collected in a single, annual interview. One of the challenges of the longer reference period is capturing data on individuals who were part of the household at some point in the reference year but left the household before the interview. To address these concerns, questions were added to the SIPP instrument starting in 2014 to collect data on these individuals, referred to as “Type 2” people. We compare data on Type 2 persons collected from the first wave of the 2014 SIPP to data on parallel individuals collected through the early waves of the 2008 SIPP panel. We find that mode of collection matters, that income measurement is problematic, and that the households in which short-term residents lived were different between the two collections.
