Young Adult Disability Status and Living in a Parental Home

Written by:
Working Paper Number SEHSD-WP2024-10

Abstract

Living arrangements of young adults have shifted over the past several decades as greater shares live in a parents’ home well into their 20s and early 30s. At the same time, many characteristics and experiences of young adults have also shifted, such as older ages at marriage, higher levels of educational attainment, and increasing reports of disabilities. The current study will use nationally representative data to examine the factors associated with young adults’ odds of living in a parents’ home, and whether these factors have shifted over time. Of particular interest are changes in the ways disability status and disability type are linked with the odds of living in a parental home. Findings from the current study will shed light on the ways in which the presence of a disability is linked to living arrangements for cohorts of young adults who find it increasingly difficult to establish an independent household.
