From 2005 to 2019, preschool enrollment underwent several changes in the United States. Over time, preschool enrollment expanded despite declines during the aftermath of the Great Recession. Further, a major shift towards public school took place for preschool enrollees, and today roughly 60 percent of preschool enrollees are in a public program. These changes align with state and local governments’ efforts to expand preschool programs over the last couple of decades.
