This working paper highlights data on the marital status of the population from the 2004 American Community Survey (ACS), a nationally representative survey of 569,000 interviewed households. The ACS is designed to provide detailed profiles of the population at the state and local levels. For the 2010 Decennial Census Program, it will gather the type of detailed social, economic, and housing data that have been collected on a sample basis in the decennial censuses since 1940.
