Working Paper Number SEHSD-WP1999-17 or SIPP-WP-231

This paper reports the results of research and analysis undertaken by Census Bureau staff. It has undergone a more limited review than official Census Bureau publications. This report is released to inform interested parties of research and to encourage discussion.

Introduction

Questions on caregiving were included in wave 7 of the 1996 panel of the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP). Wave 7 interviews took place during the period April 1998 - July 1998. The purpose of the caregiving questions was to identify individuals who gave regular unpaid care to a family member or friend who had a long-term illness or disability. When a caregiver was identified, additional questions were asked about the relationship between the caregiver and the recipient, about the time spent on caregiving activities, and about the type of care provided.

The questions about caregiving that were asked in wave 7 of individuals age 15 years old and over and are shown in Appendix A of this paper.
