Estimating Maternal Mortality from Census Data

Course Description

The purpose of this course is to train national statistical organizations in developing countries and public health stakeholders interested in estimating pregnancy-related mortality from census data. This course aims to increase in-country technical capacity to collect, analyze, and interpret data on pregnancy-related and maternal deaths.

Throughout this course, you will learn core concepts and definitions of pregnancy-related and maternal mortality indicators, the sources of data, how to evaluate fertility and mortality data, and methods to estimate and adjust of pregnancy-related and maternal mortality data. Finally, we will walk you through how to use the PRM workbook, a tool to help you estimate pregnancy-related mortality from a census.

This course is made possible by the generous support of the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Course Introduction

Measuring Pregnancy-Related and Maternal Mortality from Census Data (6:35)

Resources

Module 1: Understanding Pregnancy-Related and Maternal Mortality Indicators

In this module we will Introduce main concepts, discuss differences between pregnancy-related and maternal mortality, present main indicators, trends, and place maternal mortality within Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) context.

Episode 1: Definitions of Pregnancy-Related and Maternal Mortality (7:51):

Episode 2: Measures of Pregnancy-Related and Maternal Mortality (10:17)

Resources

Module 2: Census Questionnaire Design, Training, and Tabulation

In this module, you will learn the best practices for data collection methods on fertility, mortality, pregnancy-related and maternal mortality. We share examples of bad questions and discuss why they do not capture the data required.

Episode 1: Census Questions for Pregnancy-Related and Maternal Mortality Estimation (21:11)

Episode 2: Common Data Collection Problems for Pregnancy-Related and Maternal Mortality Indicators (4:56)

Episode 3: Required Tabulations for Estimating Pregnancy-Related and Maternal Mortality (4:38)

Resources

Module 3 Evaluating Coverage of Deaths of Women in Reproductive Age

In this module, we discuss the importance of assessing mortality data from censuses and introduce you to the General Growth Balance method and the Synthetic Extinct Generations method of assessment. We then discuss the advantages of combining the methods and practice interpreting results from the combined methods.

Episode 1: Methods for Evaluating Coverage of Deaths of Women in Reproductive Age (19:02)

Episode 2: Generalized Growth Balance Method (16:01)

Episode 3: Synthetic Extinct Generation Method and Combined GGB and SEG Method (15:24)

Resources

Module 4 Methods for Evaluating Fertility Data from Censuses

In this module, we discuss the importance of assessing fertility data from censuses, and discuss the assumptions, data requirements, logic and interpretation of assessment methods using available resources such as censuses, the standard P/F ratio (Parity/Fertility ratio), and P/F ratio for synthetic cohorts.

Episode 1: Methods for Assessment of Completeness of Fertility Data from Censuses (8:42)

Episode 2: Standard P/F Ratios Using Data from One Census (13:02)

Episode 3: P/F Ratios Method for Synthetic Cohorts Using Data from Two Censuses (11:58)

Module 5 Census PRM: Tool for Estimating Pregnancy-Related Mortality from a Census

In the final module of this course, we will walk you through the Pregnancy-Related Mortality (PRM) workbook step-by-step. From data input to estimation, assessment, adjustment, and interpretation, you will estimate four main measures using data from selected countries: Pregnancy-related mortality ratio, Pregnancy-related mortality rate, Proportion of pregnancy-related among deaths to women of reproductive age, and Lifetime risk of pregnancy-related death.
