Introduction to Income and Poverty in the United States

The Income and Poverty Report and the SPM Report are based on data from the Current Population Survey’s Annual Social and Economic Supplement.

The Current Population Survey is the longest-running survey conducted by the Census Bureau and is the official source of the national poverty estimates.

The estimates of the official poverty rates are calculated in accordance with the Office of Management and Budget’s Statistical Policy Directive 14.
