New County Business Patterns Visualization Shows Where Most Business Activity Occurs in the United States and U.S. Island Areas

How many employees worked in electronic computer manufacturing in Texas in 2022?  Or how many used-car dealerships with paid employees were there in Florida that year?

Answers: 1,728 and 2,106, respectively.

Data users can zoom in to county-level data, by state, for Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and other U.S. Island Areas by selecting from the drop-down menu.

Explore and find answers to these and other questions about the nation’s businesses in a new interactive data visualization that uses the latest data released from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 County Business Patterns (CBP).

Among statistics available:

  • Number of establishments.
  • Number of employees.
  • First quarter payroll.
  • Annual payroll.

Data users can zoom in to county-level data, by state, for Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and other U.S. Island Areas by selecting from the drop-down menu.

For example, when data users select California, they can compare CBP statistics between counties. If they select “Number of Employees,” the size of the circles that appear will correspond to the counties’ number of employees. Larger circles mean more employees.

Data users can also hover over a county to get a North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) sector-by-sector breakdown of the number of employees in each area.

NAICS data from the 2-digit sector to more detailed 6-digit levels are available in the visualization.

In San Bernardino County, California, for example, Transportation and Warehousing (NAICS codes 48-49) had that county’s greatest number of employees (106,252) during the March 12, 2022 pay period.

This was followed by Health Care and Social Assistance (NAICS code 62) with 106,201 employees and the Retail Trade sector (NAICS 44-45) with 100,251 employees.

The chart above also includes a total number of employees by county: 682,200 for selected NAICS codes in San Bernardino County.

The same data are available for Puerto Rico’s municipios or county equivalents. Selecting “Annual Payroll ($1,000)” and "All Industries" for Puerto Rico reveals that San Juan Municipio had the largest annual payroll ($7.7 billion) of all the municipios.

The Census Bureau released similar CBP data visualizations for 2021, 2020 and 2019.
