Organization Name: United Macedonian Diaspora
Headquarters: Washington, D.C.
About:
The United Macedonian Diaspora is an international non-governmental organization that promotes the interests and needs of Macedonian communities around the world, including an estimated half-a-million Americans of Macedonian heritage. The organization sponsors educational, cultural, and linguistic programming; provides scholarships; holds youth leadership conferences; organizes an annual birthright trip to Macedonia; gives aid to children with disabilities in Macedonia; and leads disaster relief efforts in times of need.
To encourage participation in the 2020 Census among the Macedonian community in the United States, the United Macedonian Diaspora has created a language assistance guide in Macedonian and launched a social media campaign. The organization also shared a video message on Census Day, April 1, about the importance of the census for Macedonian-Americans featuring Dr. Victoria Velkoff, a third-generation Macedonian-American and the Census Bureau’s Associate Director for Demographic Programs.
"With an accurate count of the number of Macedonians in the United States, doors will open to a variety of public, civic, and private-sector services that rely on census data for economic and social assessments. For over a century, Macedonians came to the U.S. fleeing oppressive regimes in southeast Europe, which didn’t allow them to be counted. Participating in the U.S. Census is both a privilege and a duty—Macedonians do exist and are proud Americans."
– Metodija A. Koloski, President of the United Macedonian Diaspora
